1. THE PLACE

The Jordan is a river that is perfectly well known not simply in The Netherlands but also in the whole of Europe. It is most distinctive with its beautiful outlook, with the gorgeous ornamentation on its banks in Amsterdam and most of all with its peaceful but undeniably gorgeous atmosphere, which can bring out only positive emotions for its visitors. On the two sides of its banks one will be able to notice not simply beautiful flower ornamentations but also a number of neat houses with a magnificent architectural design which will certainly add in a positive way to the experience of anyone who decides to pay a visit to the Jordan. It is a quiet place, which regardless how far from the center of the town is completely deprived of the feeling of numerous crowds or chaos. It is a very romantic place, one where you can only relax, sit down, have a cup of coffee and lead a long nice conversation with your close people for hours and hours, with the steady stream of the river on the background. Many tourists find this sensation quite enough for the Jordan to become their most favorite place to visit in Amsterdam.

2. THE HISTORY

The history of the place certainly contributes a lot to its blissful feel and charisma, aside from the proper Amsterdam funding for the landmark place. The neighborhood around the river has been initially established four centuries ago as a district for newcomers and this is where the numerous little houses come from, although of course, with the years passing, and especially in modern times in order to boast it as a tourist attraction, those houses have been refurnished, updated and made much more beautiful. After the 1950s, the place was entirely devoted to tourism and numerous architects, students and scholars worked together since then to elevate its beauty and charisma until now when the result pays off more than enough.

3. THE SPECTACLES

Among the many impressive add-ons to The Jordan are the place’s canals. It is in many ways comparable to the Venice ones and only with good reasons. The water of the Jordan is additionally ornamented with beautiful trees which provide a feeling of sprightliness and freshness around its banks and in combination with the canals visible the artistic and romantic feel of the river becomes full. There are also a number of memorable structures around the river like museums. For instance, one of them bears the name of The Anne Frank House which is positioned on the very edge of the river and every day it is visited by at least one thousand tourists. The place is equally beautiful throughout any season, with every season giving it a different feel, a different shade, but the peaceful atmosphere is retained, just the feeling of tranquility and of course the visual style of the place is altered slightly. Close by lies the infamous attic of Otto Frank and his family. The place is so well attended and so well supported that there are rumors that even waiting on the queue besides the view of the Jordan is worth it. Around the Jordan you will also come across some wonderful restaurants with delicious trademark Netherlands kitchen. Side by side them you will also be able to visit numerous elegant and exotic shops, both expensive and some other more affordable for clothes, jewelery, etc. And throughout the whole street, and therefore-steam of the river you will be accompanied by the music of street performers which complete the picture of perfection for this beautiful tourist destination.

History sees this city with two faces. One is modern day – Kaliningrad, a Russian city between Lithuania and Poland. The other is Konigsberg, a Teutonic Knights fort. It became Kaliningrad when the Red Army of the Soviet Union captured it near the end of World War II. Konigsberg was founded in 1255 in place of an Old Prussian town. In 1701 it became the capital of Prussia.

Kaliningrad, or Konigsberg, is perhaps most famous with the luminous citizens that it had bred throughout its history. The most well known of those must be Immanuel Kant. Kant is crucial in the history of thought, or philosophy, as it is more formally known, for uniting many conflicting views at the time. Briefly, Kant believed that the rift between empirisists and rationalists was illusionary or at best misguided. He, brilliantly, introduced the notions of apriori and aposteriori knowledge. The apriori knowledge includes our concepts of space, time, cause, effect, continuity and so on. These concepts shape the way we think and the way we perceive the world. These notions cannot be inferred from the world, they must exist independent and antedecent.

Old cathedral of Kaliningrad, Russia by Gumerov Ildar

However, these notions have no other purpose than perceiving the world. This is aposteriori knowledge – the objects and experiences that are categorized according to the apriori knowledge. The first one is the noumenal world, the second one is the phenomenal world. In a way, he said that we conform the world to ourselves, rather than conforming ourselves to the world.

Away from philosophy, and on to mathematics (which is not that different, really). Konigsberg was the place where a number of prominent and quite important mathematicians lived. One of the more recent ones is David Hilbert. Hilbert introduced many important ideas in the then rapidly changing world of mathematics. Ideas such as Hilbert spaces, which quickly became excellent and actually indispensable tools in Fourier analysis, quantum mechanics and partial differential equations, to name just a few. He is also one that brought to acceptance Georg Cantor’s set theories, but what Hilbert will be perhaps most remembered and known for in the non mathematical world is his Hilbert program. It was his effort to put mathematics on a firm basis, demanding rigorous proof and put forward a number of problems that were to be resolved if mathematics is to go forth. Many of them were resolved, but the whole program was doomed to fail, as Kurt Godel showed later with his Incompleteness Theorem.

Another of the Konigsberg mathematicians was Christian Goldbach, who, in a letter to Leonhard Euler proposed what is now known as the Goldbach conjecture. It simply states that any integer bigger than two can be written as a sum of two primes (another conjecture of his is that any integer bigger than five can be written as a sum of three primes). Speaking of Leonhard Euler, he has a problem that is actually directly connected to the city of Konigsberg (now Kaliningrad) and is known as the Seven Bridges of Konigsberg. When you are there, you should certainly try to solve it yourself. The problem is to find a way to cross all the bridges of Konigsberg, but going through each one only once. You are not allowed to reach the islands in any other way and you also have to cross each bridge completely, but without retracing it. It is a simple game, try it. Simple though as it is, this problem prefigured the field of topology and practically kickstarted graph theory.

The dome of Modena

Duomo di Modena is vital part of world heritage of UNESCO which is a “must-see” place whenever you visit Italy. It has a millennium history behind it, and had been meticulously built from the marble ruins of the ancient Roman villas. The architectural style of the Duomo is Romanesque, wrought about by the masters who lived in the Campione D’Italia. The lovely structure honors the patron and protector of Modena—San Geminiano.

Modena Cathedral, Emilia-Romagna, Italy by Roberto Ferrari

Concealed in the attics of Modenese houses is a real treasure—traditional Balsamic vinegar of the city Modena—which the Modenese families were the only ones known to produce in staggered batches—some of which are aged up to a quarter of a century. This craft is a noteworthy gem in the traditional Italian gastronomy. The production of this vinegar requires the use of barrels, crafted out of noble woods, and juice of Lambrusco grapes, coupled with tons of patience. Each year, the producers got to laboriously refill every barrel, considering the fact that a great quantity of liquid naturally evaporates during the hot weather of summers. Yet, the evaporation and the wooden barrels allow the wood flavors to combine with the liquid, which further amplifies the taste of the vinegar.

The hidden pearl of Modena: Balsamic vinegar

The real balsamic vinegar produced in Modena has been always imitated but never equaled in taste even though there are lots of imitations named MODENA’S. During the testing of the quality, one will discover how different the taste and quality of the black nectar as compared to its many imitations. The tasting process is designed to develop a high appreciation for the traditional producers, and to know how to complement every food with its unique taste. Although this kind of vinegar is seen by most people as highly expensive and very tasteful product, one can readily use the product to spice every day’s food. If carefully used, a single bottle can last for many servings.

Traditional Balsamic Vinegar tours are available in which we can learn how the ageing process of vinegar are done, and how every detail of production is readily explained to most guests. For people who want to take home some specific products, 100 ml bottles of these products are available directly from the real producers of the vinegar at very affordable and discounted prices. You can likewise have the products ship right to your doorstep using any major credit card.

Although Modena is a small city, it is very historical; it boasts of historical architecture and delicacies. If you want to have a living experience of the city, it is advisable, at least, to spend one night and a complete day to have a real feel of this historical city. Likewise, Modena is well-known for the famous Parmesan cheese, Zampone, Totellini pasta, and Cotechino. Moreover, there are never-ending arrays of very good restaurants in the center of the city, such as Bottura Osteria Francescana. You will definitely have a wide variety of delicacies to choose that would definitely satisfy your palate.

Red Ferrari by Tom Wolf

Modena is likewise a world center of motor sport and supercars. The newly inaugurated Enzo Ferrari museums are very interesting venues for those die-hard fanatics of Ferrari Cars. The contemporary building readily offers rotating car collections of various themes, which is expressive of the very soul of Modena. Likewise, you can also take a shuttle bus ride and have a visit to the Maranello Ferrari museum.

There are plenty of accommodations in Modena from 4 stars hotels, farms stays agriturismo and cheap b&b. In short there is something for eveyone regardless if you your budget is big or small, Modena is not going to fail you.
